Gallery Features Artists from two Different Worlds

Every human being has distinguishing characteristics that make him or her unique from other people. An individual's identity can be formed by a multitude of factors including genetic makeup, family, environment, and society.

Originating from contrasting environments with different societal influences, artists Phyllis Joos, Hancock, and Melissa McDougall, Perth, Australia, express identity through the creative means of visual art. Their art, "American Beauty," paintings by Melissa McDougall, and "I Know Who I Am," prints by Phyllis Joos, will be featured in the next exhibit in the Gallery of Humanities Fine Arts at the University of Minnesota, Morris. The public is invited to an opening reception for the exhibit at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Gallery. The exhibit continues through March 8.

Joos, born and raised in Hancock, Minn., enrolled in studio art courses at UMM in 1990. Since then she has continued her education with an emphasis in printmaking and ceramics.

"Someone once told me that I was a feminist artist, and I said, 'Oh no, I couldn't be, I'm a Wisconsin Synod Lutheran,'" says Joos. "In reality both give inspiration for my images and subject matter."

Says McDougall: "I am particularly interested in the mythology associated with American culture. I am fascinated by the 1940s and 1950s which ultimately gave birth to the wealth and aspirations of the American Dream."

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m. Parking is available in the north lot in the places reserved for visitors.
