The musical talents of students at the University of Minnesota, Morris will be showcased at a performance of Instrumental Jazz Groups at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21 and 22, in Recital Hall of Humanities Fine Arts at UMM. Jazz ensemble director James "Doc" Carlson invites area residents to hear original compositions by UMM students. The performance will feature guest artist Kenni Holmen, a highly active recording and touring musician from the Twin Cities.
Student composers are Abram Heyn, Princeton, "Vanished with the Wind Band"; Tom Nordlund, Madison, Wis., "First Square"; Julia Sharpe, Maple Grove, "Full Eclipse"; Tim Howey, Lakeville, "West Side Gospel Brass"; and Kevin Logan, Madison, S.D., "On the Way."
Guest artist Kenni Holmen has performed with Tony Bennett, the Glen Miller Orchestra, Garrison Keillor, and many others. In addition, Holmen has also recorded with well-known artists such as Janet Jackson, Rod Stewart, and Prince, just to name a few. Holmen writes, co-produces and performs with New Age Lorie Line and tours with Prince's horn section, "The Horn Heads."
The UMM Jazz Ensembles are one of 25 big bands from around the world to perform at the annual Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Festival. They have performed at Carnegie Hall with the Count Basie Orchestra, and in The North Sea Jazz Festival at The Hague, Netherlands.
Tickets for both performances are available at the Information Center in the UMM Student Center or at the door. Ticket prices are $3 for general admission and $1 for seniors and students.
