Kaplan Newsweek sees UMM as "Hidden Treasure"

A "hidden treasure," one of 30 small schools that "deserve more national recognition," is how National Guidance Counselors perceive the University of Minnesota, Morris according to a recent survey conducted by Kaplan Newsweek magazine. UMM is one of only two Minnesota schools cited in the magazine's recent "How to Get Into College" issue. Carleton College in Northfield is also mentioned in the category.

This is the second time in as many weeks that UMM has received acclaim in a national publication. UMM was the only Minnesota college listed among the Top 100 best buys in U.S. public higher education in a recent issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine.

"This acknowledgement is testimony to UMM's excellence," said Madeline Maxeiner, UMM associate vice chancellor for external relations. "We appreciate the recognition even as we try to increase UMM's visibility in national circles. Our own students and alumni have already discovered that UMM is special. We invite others to discover that as well."

The Kaplan list is drawn from a 2002 Kaplan survey of National Guidance Counselors from public and private high schools. Counselors recommended outstanding colleges and universities in the categories of best value, hidden treasures, best career services, best academic facilities, best freshman housing, highest academic standards, and hot and trendy. Complete results of the survey are included in the 2003 Edition of "The Unofficial UnBiased Insider's Guide to the 320 Most Interesting Colleges" by Trent Anderson and Seppy Basili. Authors Anderson and Basili have more than a decade of experience relating to college admissions.

UMM's mission as an academically rigorous, public undergraduate liberal arts college is distinctive. Declared "a model liberal arts college" by The Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in its recent reaccreditation report, UMM's goal is to be the best public liberal arts college in America.
