Humanities Fine Arts Gallery:
Paintings by Melissa McDougall and "I Know Who I Am:, graphics by Phyllis Joos

February 12 - March 8, 2003

The second exhibit of the spring semester in the Humanities Fine Arts Gallery features the work of Phyllis Joos, a life-long native of Hancock, Minn., who explores her identity as wife, mother, and artist though a variety of subjects in more than 40 works in graphic media. Also featured is Melissa McDougall, an Australian-American artist who has interpreted her new midwestern environment through 26 oil paintings that focus upon the media-created ideal image for young women in American culture.

UMM students Sarah Roesch, New Ulm, and Crista Wengler, Brookings, S.D., Humanities Fine Arts Gallery interns, have been in charge of this exhibit. As early as last August, they began to design the format and research content for the exhibition catalogue that will be available at the Gallery for this exhibit. Working in collaboration with both artists, Roesch and Wengler wrote essays on the work of each, acquired artists' statements, compiled the list of works in the exhibit, processed images for the catalogue, posters, announcements, and invitations - tasks successfully accomplished with background and skills from their studies in art history and studio arts at UMM.

The opening reception for the exhibit is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gallery. Both artists and student interns will be present at the reception, which is open to the public. This will be a special time to celebrate the creative work of artists and interns as the event brings them together in a presentation of the arts.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
