by Judy Riley, UMM News Service -- Olympic champion Billy Mills will speak, and social justice activist Timothy Wise will provide the keynote address during the 30th World Touch Cultural Heritage Week (WTCHW), an annual celebration of diversity at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Events are set for Monday-Saturday, March 24-29. The public is enthusiastically invited to campus to participate in this engaging week of celebration, free of charge.
Tim Wise will kick off the week's events at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 24, in Edson Auditorium in the UMM Student Center. Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean, John F. Schwaller, will provide a welcome for the week and introduce the speaker. A reception will follow in the Alumni Room of Oyate Hall in the Student Center. Wise's presentation is co-sponsored by the Black Student Union student organization at UMM.
The only American ever to win a gold medal in the 10,000 meter run in the history of the Games, Billy Mills will welcome participants in the 20th annual Circle of Nations Indian Association (CNIA) 3K Peace Run, scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, in front of the Minority Resource Center on the campus mall. He will also speak at 7:30 p.m. that evening in Edson Auditorium.
Mills, an Oglala Lakota (Sioux), born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, scored one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history in 1964 with a stunning come-from-behind finish. Chancellor Sam Schuman will introduce the speaker. Mills' presentation, which will be followed by a reception in the Alumni Room, is co-sponsored by CNIA.
The film, "Catfish and Black Bean Sauce, " will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, in Edson Auditorium. The film is co-sponsored by the Asian Student Association and the Black Student Union. A welcome will be provided by Carol McCannon, student activities program adviser. On Thursday, an interactive African drum and dance performance with Fred Viran, co-sponsored by the Black Student Union, will begin at 4 p.m. in Oyate Hall, UMM Student Center. An invitational ethnic dinner will be held on Friday evening.
ERV, a Latin Fusion Band that plays a new kind of Latin music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 28, in Edson Auditorium. Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Sandra Olson-Loy will provide the introduction for the performance, which will be followed by a reception in the Alumni Room. The performance is co-sponsored by the United Latinos student organization at UMM.
The 19th annual traditional CNIA Pow-wow, with Grand Entries at 1 and 6 p.m., will be held Saturday, March 29, in the UMM P.E. Center. Co-host drum participants will be Bad Nation from North Dakota and the East Bank Singers from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. Color guard will be provided by the Sisseton Wahpeton Vietnam Veterans. The week will culminate with an Inter-(student)organizational Dance Mixer at 9 p.m. in Oyate Hall. Cambodian Dancers and other individuals will perform.
