Monday, March 24 7:30 p.m. Assumption Catholic Church, Morris.
From standards like Bach's motet for double choir, "Sing to the Lord a New Made Song," to Minnesota choral standards by F. Melius Christiansen, the repertoire for the University of Minnesota, Morris Concert Choir Spring Tour offers a range of music that's sure to please, inspire and entertain.
The Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Hodgson, will perform their Home concert in Morris at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 24, at Assumption Church as part of its spring concert tour. The concert is free and open to the public.
The choir will also perform March 19-23 in Owatonna, Rochester, Stillwater and Minneapolis.
This season's repertoire includes: "Alleluia, Ascendit" by William Byrd and "Surely He hath borne our Griefs," by Karl Graun. A piece of Gregorian Chant; "Vidi Aquam," arranged by Paul Christiansen, and G. P. da Palestrina close the first group. Johann Sebastian Bach's motet "Sing to the Lord a New Made Song," follows with four contemporary pieces, "Musiks Empire," by Lloyd Pfautsch, "Sancte Michael Archangele" by Chad Olson (a UMM student) "Alleluia", by Randall Thompson and "Wake, Awake," by F. M. Christiansen closes the first half.
The second half opens with four seasonal pieces: "Lift Up Your heads" arranged by Olaf Christiansen, "O Come Little Children" by J. P. A. Schulz, arranged by James Fritschel, "Rise Up Shepherds," by Don Besig, and "Goin' to Bethlehem," by Jay Althouse. A section of "Riverside" pieces follow and the last portion of the concert features several spirituals and folk song arrangements and closes with the choir's haunting Hebrew farewell, "Shalom Chaverim," arranged by Dr. Hodgson.
The choir is noted for its performing excellence and enthusiasm which is fueled by the vitality of its talented conductor. Dr. Hodgson brings to the podium a combination of the poise and elegance of the St. Olaf tradition under Olaf Christiansen, and the dynamics and energy of the Concordia Choir tradition under Paul Christiansen. Dr. Hodgson has a bachelor of arts degree from St. Olaf College, Northfield, where he studied with Olaf Christiansen. He received a master of arts degree from Central Washington State College, Ellensburg, Wash., working there with Dr. Wayne Hertz, and earned a doctor of musical arts from the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana, Ill., studying with Harold Decker. Before coming to the University of Minnesota, Morris, Hodgson served as assistant choral director to Paul Christiansen at Concordia College in Moorhead. Most recently, Hodgson served as the interim director to the National Lutheran Choir, a professional choir centered in Minneapolis.
