"Teaching by Design 2003: Technology Integration," a dinner conference for K-12 educators, will be held from 3-9 p.m. Monday, March 31, at the University of Minnesota, Morris. The event will include exhibits of innovative projects by regional teachers and staff, national and local software, and hardware and support vendors, as well as concurrent break-out sessions on technology integration with dinner and a keynote address by an award-winning area teacher and technology coordinator.

A keynote address, "Technology Integration Across the Curriculum, " by Tracy Baxter and Lori Borgen, Hawley Public Schools, will be given at 7:30 p.m.

A graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead, Baxter taught for 11 years at the Cyrus (Minn.) Math, Science and Technology Magnet School where she taught multi-age classes of 4-6th graders with a strong emphasis on the integration of math, science and technology throughout the curriculum.

In 1996 Baxter became the Technology Coordinator at the Hawley Elementary School in Hawley, Minn. During the past seven years she has played an integral part in building a school wide network that has made a variety of technology tools available for teaching colleagues to use throughout their curriculum.

Baxter was awarded the eTies Technology Leadership award in 2000 by the TIES Consortium in Minneapolis, MN. She was named an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2001 by Apple Computer and still serves in this role. She was also named an Inspired Educator by Inspiration Software in 2001.

Borgen is also a graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead and has taught for 15 years at the Hawley Elementary School in both the primary and upper grades. She has spent the last several years teaching fifth grade where she integrates technology throughout her curriculum daily and places a strong emphasis math and art. Her class is producing a monthly school-wide news program that is aired on the Hawley community cable channel.
