Horace T. Morse Award

Jon Anderson, associate professor of mathematics, and Leslie Meek, associate professor of psychology, are among eight recipients University wide of the Horace T. Morse - University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education.

The awards aim to provide "tangible all-University recognition to individuals who have demonstrated their strong commitment and outstanding contributions to undergraduate education."

Given to exceptional faculty members nominated by their respective colleges in the University of Minnesota system, the award contributes to the improvement of undergraduate education at the University by publicizing the recipients' laudable work as a resource for the whole faculty.

"Beyond question, Dr. Anderson is one of the finest teachers on our campus," said John F. Schwaller, vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean at UMM. "His skills are not exercised solely in the classroom but in countless ways in countless venues where he interacts with his students -- from the Web, to the hallway, to the café in the Student Center."

Anderson holds a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in statistics, as well as a doctoral degree in biostatistics, all from the University of Minnesota.

A UMM faculty member since 1994, Anderson was a 2000 recipient of the University of Minnesota, Morris Alumni Association Teaching Award.

Said Anderson: "I'm honored to be mentioned among the finest instructors at the University. It is a privilege to work with the excellent colleagues and students at UMM."

"Dr. Meek embodies all of the outstanding qualities one anticipates from a Morse Award winner," continued Schwaller. "Not only has she distinguished herself among her faculty colleagues, she holds an undergraduate degree from America's Best Public Liberal Arts College [UMM], and thus brings to the classroom not only the honed skills of a true professional, but also an empathy for the students she teaches."

Meek holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from UMM, as well as a doctoral degree in biopsychology from the University of Michigan. In addition, she was a 1998 recipient of the Walter D. Mink Undergraduate Teacher Award from the Minnesota Psychological Association, and, as a UMM student, received the coveted Donald G. Paterson Award for Outstanding Psychology Undergraduate in Minnesota.

"I am simply overwhelmed to have received this award," said Meek. When I look at the list of UMM recipients of the Morse Award, I feel very honored to be included on that list. In truth, the wonderful students who attend UMM make teaching so enjoyable and fulfilling, that I really owe the award to them."

Meek's major teaching objectives are simply stated: "I want my students to learn. I want students to be involved with me in the process of learning. I want students to be interested in and intrigued by what they are learning, to be intellectually challenged by my classes, and, finally, to be able to retain and apply the theoretical and practical information they learn."

Each recipient of the Horace T. Morse Award receives a $1,500 continuous augmentation to their salary during their tenure as a University of Minnesota faculty member, as well as a $2,500 stipend given annually for three years, to be used within the recipient's discipline (mathematics for Anderson; psychology for Meek).

Recipients Universitywide will be formally recognized at an all-U ceremony on April 21 at the McNamara Alumni Center on the Minneapolis campus. Anderson and Meek will also be recognized on the Morris campus during the April 17 Faculty and Staff Recognition Dinner and the May 9 Student Honors and Awards ceremony.
