United Latinos Poetry reading

The United Latinos Annual poetry reading will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, in Oyate Hall.

Musical performances

The following musical performances are scheduled during the weeks of April 1-15. Unless otherwise noted, all performances are at 7:30 p.m. in HFA Recital Hall: April 6: Jessica Nelson, senior bassoon, 3 p.m.; Angela Adams, Kristen Moritz and Megan Losure, voice; April 8: Mixed Recital; Sunday, April 13: Concert Band Spring Concert, 3 p.m.; Lauren Gaugert, flute; Tuesday, April 15: Chad Olson, senior saxophone, 7:30 p.m.

If it's spring, this must be baseball!

25th Year of UMM Jazz Fest

UMM had one jazz ensemble and one jazz combo at the First Annual Jazz Fest, held in 1979. You can join in celebrating 25 years of Jazz Fest at this year's 25th Annual UMM Jazz Fest April 3-5. Three days of jazz, featuring UMM's acclaimed student jazz musicians and director James "Doc" Carlson, along with guest artists Eric Marienthal on saxophone and Bryon Stripling on trumpet. Public performances at 7:30 p.m. each evening in Edson Auditorium. Jazz Fest draws over 700 high school and community jazz musicians who participate in three days of clinics. Pride Week Events

Enjoy these events during the annual Pride Week. Sunday, April 6: Comedian David Maclean, Turtle Mountain Cafe, 7 p.m.; Monday, April 7: Concert with Jamie Anderson, Turtle Mountain Café, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, April 11: Dance, Oracle, Student Center, 9 p.m.

Are you stuck in a bog? Is your mind in a fog?

Public performances of this year's children's theater show, Hyronomous A. Frog, will be at 7 p.m. Friday, April 11, and at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12= in the Proscenium Theatre of Humanities Fine Arts. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under. There will also be special student matinees April 10-16 for elementary schools. This production is funded in part by a grant from the Lake Region Arts Council through a Minnesota State Legislative appropriation. Post Jazz Fest reception

Meet with alumni and students for a post Jazz Fest reception on Saturday, April 5, at the home of Thom '92 and Kris Howden, 311 E 3rd St, Morris. Sponsored by the UMM Alumni Association, festivities will begin immediately following the 7:30 p.m. Jazz Fest performance.

Back to the 50s

Who put the bop in the bop shoo-bop shoo-bop? Find out on Saturday, April 5, 5-7:30 p.m. in the Turtle Mountain Café during the Stevens County Historical Museum fundraiser. The "Blue Notes" will perform music of the 50s era. Enjoy a typical 50s meal -- burgers and fries and a soda fountain with flavored cokes -- before attending Saturday's Jazz Fest performance. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for the meal, Blue Notes performance and fundraiser. Several thousand square feet in the museum building expansion is dedicated space for UMM, WSCA collections and research.

Midwest Philosophy Colloquium

Marina Oshana, associate professor of philosophy, Bowling Green State University, is the third speaker to deliver the 27th Midwest Philosophy Colloquium address on the series topic "Free Will and Moral Responsibility." She will speak on "Autonomy and Free Will" at 7 p.m. April 7 in the Newman Center. She will also present a paper the same day, "Responsibility and Reasons-Responsiveness," at 2:30 p.m. in the Prairie Lounge.

Public invited to participate in Roger Moe forum on Rural Policy

Former Senate Majority Leader Roger Moe will visit UMM and speak at a public community forum on Rural Policy: Past, Present and Future at 7 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the Science Auditorium. Moe will visit Paula O'Loughlin's American Political Culture class and Steve Gross' Minnesota History class during the day. Moe's visit is co-sponsored by the political science discipline and the Center for Small Towns.

Chamber seminar with Bob Ash

The Morris Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will sponsor national speaker of Life Lessons, Bob Ash, in two seminars on Tuesday, April 8, at the Prairie Inn, Morris. Morning session, "Creating a Positive Workplace," will be held 9 a.m.-noon. Afternoon session, "Great Leaders Always Wear Clean Underwear," will be held from 1-4 p.m. One may attend either or both sessions. Annual Barber Lecture in Literature

Dr. Lawrence Buell, professor of English at Harvard University, will deliver this year's Barber Lecture in Literature at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, in the Alumni Room of Oyate Hall. A reception will follow in Oyate Hall. The Barber Lecture Series is made possible by a gift to the University of Minnesota, Morris from Laird Barber, UMM professor emeritus of English, and the late Dorothy Barber.

Community dinner with Supreme Court

Western Minnesota residents are invited to meet the Minnesota Supreme Court and local judges during an informal community dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in Oyate Hall. The "Meet Your Court" dinner will kick off the Supreme Court's spring visit to the Eighth Judicial District. Tickets at $11 will be available at the Information Desk in the Student Center or by calling 589-7287 by April 10 for reservations. Seating is limited. In a student-focused segment of the visit, the state's highest court also will hear oral arguments of an actual case at Morris Area High School on April 16. Morris area students will watch oral arguments and ask questions of the justices. Following the program, the justices will eat lunch with students and visit classrooms at schools throughout the region. The visit is part of a biannual program that seeks to teach students about the court system and build the public's trust and confidence in the Judicial Branch.
