Academic Challenge


Sunday, April 20th, 2003. Competition at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Televised on Pioneer Public Television.

Sixteen teams of talented high school students from the area are competing in round one of Academic Challenge, produced by Media Services at the University of Minnesota, Morris.

In first round action of Academic Challenge 2003 at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 20, the Herman-Norcross Panthers take on the MACCRAY Wolverines. Herman-Norcross's team, coached by Kim Davidson, is comprised of Jason Werk, John Todd, Matthew Oachs, and Alayna Marks. MACCRAY's team, coached by Cheryl Retrum, consists of Mike Aalderks, William Schmidt, Ryan Petersen, Adam Rutherford, and John Hagemeyer.

In a second match at 3:30 p.m. April 20, the Redwood Valley Cardinals will take on the Chokio-Alberta Spartans. Redwood Valley's team, coached by Joni Nieland, is comprised of Emily Walz, Beth Angstman, Wes Partch, Kyle Knudsen, Mark Anderson. Chokio-Alberta's team, coached by Ruth Anderson, consists of Matthew Burnett, Justin Finke, David Lubenow, and Tony Wernsing.

The matches will air on Pioneer Public Television.

This is the 10th year that UMM has produced Academic Challenge.

"I think it is an appropriate and exciting opportunity for UMM to sponsor this chance for academically talented high school students from our region to show their scholarship and intellectual agility," said UMM Chancellor Sam Schuman. "We enjoy hosting the teams on our campus during the taping of Academic Challenge."

Academic Challenge teams are comprised of four students each (some schools also name alternate team members) who will answer a series of questions concerning a wide variety of topics. The winner of the local competition will advance to a national level tournament.
