Faculty-Staff Recognition Dinner


Thursday, April 17, 2003 6:30 p.m. at Oyate Hall, University of Minnesota, Morrs.

Faculty and staff from the University of Minnesota, Morris who are recipients of awards and honors or who will be retiring during this academic year will be honored during the 12th Annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Dinner to be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in Oyate Hall. A brief program will begin at 7 p.m. Tom McRoberts, associate director, Continuing Education, and director, Center for International Programs, will serve as the program emcee.

Prior to the dinner, the UMM Retirees Association (UMMRA) will host a reception from 4:30-6 p.m. at LaFave House, 305 College Avenue. Earlier in the day, UMMRA members will meet for lunch at 11:45 a.m. at the Prairie Inn, tour the Aaron Carlson Cabinet Company at 1:30 p.m., enjoy a presentation at the Prairie Renaissance Arts Center Gallery at 2:15 p.m., and, at 3 p.m., relax for coffee at Common Grounds Coffee House.

The following faculty and staff have announced their retirement: Thelma Wilson, principal secretary in the Office of the Registrar; Vinod Nangia, associate professor of physics; Vasilikie Demos, professor of sociology; John Ingle, professor of studio art; and Audre Ross, principal accounts specialist in the Division of Science and Mathematics.

Pieranna Garavaso, professor of philosophy, will be honored as the recipient of the UMM Alumni Association Teaching Award. Jon Anderson and Leslie Meek will be honored as recipients of the Horace T. Morse - University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education. Ardath Larson, assistant librarian, Rodney A. Briggs Library, will receive the Morris Academic Staff Award. Other faculty and staff award recipients will also be recognized.

The retirees'

Vicky Demos has been a faculty member since 1977. Instrumental in establishing the women's studies major at UMM, Demos has authored numerous published articles and served as president of the Sociologists for Women in Society organization and of the North Central Sociological Association (NCSA). In 2001 she received the NCSA Aida K. Tomeh Distinguished Service Award. She also received the UMM Faculty Distinguished Research Award in 2001.

John Ingle has been a faculty member since 1966. Ingle's career as a teacher of excellence is paralleled by his career as an acclaimed watercolor artist. His work has been exhibited in numerous artistic presentations and exhibitions as well as the topic of numerous books, reviews and articles. Ingle's paintings have found permanent homes in such places as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Yale University Art Gallery.

Vinod Nangia was a faculty member from 1982 until his retirement in December 2002. He taught the full range of physics courses including electronics and experimental physics. His recent research was focused on numerical studies of the vibration-rotation spectrum of dipolar molecules.

Audre Ross has been a staff member since 1964, serving her first four and one half years as UMM's first financial aid secretary. She has held her current position with the Division of Science and Mathematics for 35 years. Ross is responsible for ordering all supplies and equipment needed for instruction and research in her division. She manages the budgets for all the disciplines and faculty grants. In 1982 she received the Mary Martelle Memorial Award, and, in 1992, the Outstanding Support Staff Award.

Thelma Wilson was a staff member from 1981 until her retirement in December 2002. She served her entire career in the Office of the Registrar. Her first responsibilities included grade collection and distribution. She played an important role in converting hand-transcripted academic records to computer records, and most recently helped with the transition of student transcripts to the University's PeopleSoft program. Wilson received the Outstanding Support Staff Award in 1995.
