Poetry Reading collected from Conversations with Elderly Residents

Monday, April 14, 2003 7 pm, at Common Cup Coffee, Morris

A poetry reading and celebration marking the first three years of a service learning partnership between University of Minnesota, Morris writing students and elderly residents of West Wind Village (formerly the Villa of St. Francis) in Morris, will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, at Common Cup Coffee in Morris.

Students in the Fundamentals of Writing, College Writing, and Introduction to Creative Writing courses taught by UMM faculty Argie Manolis study the personal, social, and political challenges of aging, plan weekly interactive activities for the residents, and record their words in "found poems." These poems are the exact words the elderly spoke during the activity; students simply choose where to begin and end each poem and incorporate line breaks and titles.

In the past three years, 250+ students have collected poetry from 75+ residents--more than 500 poems in all. Up to this point, the poems were available only to the residents and their families. Soon, thanks to support from many participants, the community will have the chance to hear a selection of these poems for the first time.

Hear Morris city officials, clergy, faculty, family members, and students read poems that poignantly reflect family memories, the history of (and changes in) rural Minnesota, the challenges (and joys) of aging, and the intergenerational connections that have come out of the project.

Please come to Common Cup Coffee on Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m.
