April 23, 2003 12pm at the University of Minnesota, Morris.
Pride of the Prairie Community Foods Day is set for Wednesday, April 23, at the University of Minnesota, Morris as part of an Earth Week celebration of sustainable community and foods. Area residents are encouraged to attend this informative and palatable event.
A panel discussion on the topic, "UMM Food Roots": an agri-cultural look at UMM's food history and vision for the future, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the Student Center.
The 4th Annual Community Food Expo is set from 2 to 4 p.m. on the campus Mall. (Rain site is Oyate Hall in the Student Center.) Over 20 exhibitors, including area farmers who sell their products directly to consumers, community supported agriculture (CSA) farms, civic and sustainable agriculture organizations, and the Pride of the Prairie local foods initiative partners, will be on hand. New this year to the Community Food Expo is the addition of on-site food sales from Pride of the Prairie farms.
UMM junior and one of the event organizers, Anne Borgendale, commented, "In previous years the Expo has been an event solely focused around education on a variety of food and agricultural issues, but this year with a farmers' market-like atmosphere, in addition to these goals, we looking forward to also creating first-time customers and lifetime connections. We also hope that the extended Morris area community sees this as an occasion to buy their favorite locally produced spring foods." Area residents are encouraged to bring the tastes of the season home!
Capping off the day will be UMM's Spring Local Foods Meal serving from 4:45 to 6:30 p.m. in the Food Service Building. Prepared by Sodexho Campus Services, homegrown foods are featured in a "Breakfast at Dinner" menu which includes: homemade cinnamon rolls, homemade corn bread with honey, barley and wild rice salads, biscuits with beef stew or three-bean stew, whole wheat pancakes with real maple syrup, baked ziti with four-cheese sauce, and carved ham.
Price is $10 for adults, $6 for children and off-campus UMM students, and free for UMM students with their regular meal plan. Tickets are available at the West Central Research and Outreach Center (by phone 320-589-1711), Pomme de Terre Foods, the UMM Student Center Lobby (4/21-4/23, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.), and at the door of UMM Food Service. Locally-grown live music will be provided by Carol Ford and Colleen Frey, followed by Jake Rowan and the Groove Machine.
All of the events of the Pride of the Prairie Community Foods Day are made possible thanks to the University of Minnesota, Morris Foodies, MPIRG (Minnesota Public Interest Research Group), Pomme de Terre Foods, Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance, Campus Activities Council, West Central Research and Outreach Center, area farmers and all of the Pride of the Prairie Partners - led by the Land Stewardship Project.
