"Domestic Views" by Vincent Hron and "Rural Perspectives" by Michael Paul will be featured as the next exhibit in the Humanities Fine Arts Gallery at the University of Minnesota, Morris October 29 through December 1.
An opening reception for the exhibit is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29. Michael Paul will be at the reception, and will present a slide lecture about his work at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in HFA room 2.
The exhibit could have been called "inside and out" because these artists represent familiar features of our landscape and domestic environments, visually calling our attention to the important aspects of our surroundings that we do not see because we are so preoccupied with the practical matters of getting things done.
Vincent Hron represents interiors of homes, front and back porches, backyards of American residential neighborhoods. His paintings allow us to "look in" at familiar places and see them as if for the first time with all their individual, unmatched furnishings, family photographs, and mixed decorations. Depicting the scenes with a slightly warped space, the artist provides the viewer with a wider, higher, and deeper vision than is ordinary. In that large arena of perception, we can recognize the importance of the commonplace things we take for granted and delight in the importance of our everyday lives and environments.
Michael Paul represents houses in rural towns and buildings on farms in a precise classical way. The precision, balance, and clarity of his structured compositions generate a monumental quality to simple, home-made houses and amplify the majesty of a great barn and silo on the open prairie. The encaustic medium with which he works suspends color pigment in a wax medium, creating an effect of careful description of objects enveloped in a rich matrix of light and color. A native of Minnesota and the prairie, Paul commemorates significant features of our environment before they disappear in the wake of "progress."
Parking is available in the North Lot just east of Humanities Fine Arts. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m.
