UMM Institution-wide Tenure Track Faculty Search Procedures.

1. In consultation, the Division Chair, Dean and Chancellor agree that there is a position open.

2. A Search Committee and Chair is selected by the Division Chair.

3. A position description, selection criteria and any advertisements, are composed by the Division Chair, consulting with appropriate Division/discipline faculty, Search Committee, etc.

4. The Division Chair submits the proposed Search Committee, position description, advertisements, proposed salary range and recruiting strategy, with the FORM 16, to the VCAA. (Form 16 can be processed entirely electronically.)

5. The Search Committee has its first official meeting, including the VCAA and the Personnel Officer (Affirmative Action Officer) to discuss the recruitment process. Division Chairs may wish to attend.

6. Search Committee reads applications, selects top 6-10 for preliminary interviews. Normally, no search will procede unless at least one candidate in the interview pool is a minority (as per policy established by Dean Blake in November, 1993).

7. Search Committee Chair submits FORM 17, or all information required for the FORM 17, to Division Chair from which it goes to VCAA & AA Officer > U of MN, TC (first to the Equal Employment Opportunity office, then to Human Resources).

8. The full Search Committee conducts (optional) preliminary interviews, customarily by telephone.

9. Schedule on-campus interviews by Search Committee with c. 3 candidates. Division Chair and VCAA are notified of the list to be invited, and must approve it. On-campus interviews include the following elements (often combined):

  • Individual meetings with the Chancellor, Dean and Division Chair
  • Meeting with the entire Discipline
  • Meeting open to the entire Division
  • Tour of campus and Morris
  • Presentation or instructional demonstration of some sort, with at least partial student audience.

    10. Search Committee gathers reactions from participants on-campus interviews. This includes a meeting of Chair of Search Committee; Division Chair; Dean; Chancellor. Others may, by mutual agreement, also participate in this meeting.

    11. The Search Committee makes its formal written recommendation/report to the Division Chair, citing the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates interviewed.

    12. The Division Chair, using the second round FORM 17, makes an official recommendation to the Dean (and, implicitly, the Chancellor). At this point, the candidate can be informed of the status of the search, but no formal or informal "offer" is permitted.

    13. The FORM 17 is submitted for approval to the VCAA, AA Officer, and Twin Cities.

    14. A formal letter of appointment is prepared and sent from the Dean, to be signed and returned by the candidate.
