Ann Marie Vangstad, University of Minnesota, Morris senior building and grounds worker with the Office of Residential Life, received the 2010 Upper Midwest Region–Association of College and University Housing Officers Support Staff Recognition Award. She received the honor at the organization’s annual conference in Minneapolis this fall.
Vangstad was nominated in recognition of 25 years of dedicated service and hard work. Custodial work, like Vangstad’s and her fellow staff members, can be difficult, ranging from snow removal in sub-zero temperatures and harsh winds to hauling furniture down residence hall stairs in 90-degree heat and humidity.
“Through it all,” says Vangstad’s nominator and ORL Assistant Director Tom Ladner, “Ann maintains a positive attitude and wonderful sense of humor.” Ladner also praises Vangstad’s dedication to the students and their environment. “Ann’s residents have gone as far as cleaning entire floors of her building as a way of saying ‘Thanks for all you do!’”
Vangstad emphasizes the team-oriented nature of her work.
“It was an extreme honor from Tom [Ladner], but my job would not be my job if I didn’t have the other custodians working with me,” says Vangstad. “Credit should go to all the support staff. They need as much recognition as I do. I just really appreciate the people I work with. I couldn’t do my job without them!”
