Katie Saddison ’11, White Pigeon, Michigan, University of Minnesota, Morris Air Quality Green Corps member, has organized a silent bike auction on the mall from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011. Pickup for auction winners of the bikes will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the bike auction will be held in Oyate Hall in the Student Center.
Discarded bikes that have been collected on campus will be auctioned with proceeds going towards maintaining and improving the Morris BikeShare program. Saddison plans to sand down the Morris campus bikes, a gift to the campus from the Class of 2010, and give them a new coat of paint. Remaining funds will be available for maintenance and upkeep in the future.
On Saturday, May 7, 2011, a bicycle workshop will held for members of the campus and community to make minor repairs to their own bikes. From 12 until 3pm at the Recycling building in the North parking lot, a local technician will be on hand to help attendees and provide tire tubes, chains, and brakes to those in need of replacement parts. Saddison also hopes to fix up the bike-share bikes at this event. Come ready to get your hands dirty, because it will be a great hands-on learning experience.
Free pizza will be served at the workshop at 1:30 p.m.
“The goal of both of these events is to get more individuals out of their cars and biking,” says Saddison.
