Sierra Club conducted a survey and completed a ranking process of “Cool Schools” in the United States, and the University of Minnesota, Morris is included. Published in the Sierra magazine, Sierra Club hopes that the ranking will act as a “guide for prospective students who seek a way to compare colleges based on commitment to environmentalism.” In addition, the project serves as a reward to “institutions that work hard to protect the planet.”
Morris ranked 69 of 118 participating institutions. The scoring was primarily based on energy, efficiency, food, academics, purchasing, transportation, waste, administration, financial commitment, and other projects were also considered. Morris scored highly in response to its wind energy program, the biomass facility, the solar thermal array heating the Regional Fitness Center pool, the Morris Healthy Eating initiative, the GreenCorps program, and the University of Minnesota Systemwide Sustainability Plan.
The Sierra Club is America’s largest grassroots environmental organization with a mission of “working together to protect our communities and the planet.” Sierra reaches 1.4 million members. The Cool School rankings can be found online.
