So Percussion to Perform at Morris

Posted by Jenna Ray on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013

Event Date/Time: Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 7:30 pm
Location: HFA Recital Hall

Sō Percussion will perform on Saturday, January 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities Fine Arts (HFA) Recital Hall. Known for its use of such unusual and exotic instruments as toy pianos, hammers, a glockenspiel, and an amplified cactus, the Brooklyn-based quartet promises an evening not soon to be forgotten. This is the fourth event in the 2012-13 Performing Arts Series.

Since founding the group in 1999, Eric Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting have been creating music that is raucous, touching, barbarous, and heartfelt. Called an “experimental powerhouse” by the Village Voice and “brilliant” by the New York Times, Sō Percussion has forged a unique and diverse career through its own original music and its innovative work with exciting contemporary composers.

Sō Percussion is also heavily invested in mentoring young musicians. Its members are co-directors of a new percussion program that places students in a double-degree course at Bard College-Conservatory of Music, equipping undergraduates with elite conservatory training and a broad liberal arts education. In 2009, the group created the annual Sō Percussion Summer Institute, an intensive two-week chamber music seminar for college-age percussionists, at Princeton University.

Prior to its evening performance, Sō Percussion will hold an interactive workshop from 2 until 3:30 p.m. in the HFA Recital Hall. This event is free and open to the public. Workshop participants will explore the processes and instruments to be used in the concert. Following the workshop, there will be a short rehearsal for those interested in performing with Sō during one of the evening concert pieces.

Tickets are available for purchase online, by phone and mail, or in person at the Office of Student Activities, Conferences, and Special Events. Further information regarding ticket sales and the Performing Arts Series is available online or by calling 320-589-6077.

This engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest, which is generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts with additional contributions from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
