The next Morris Community Meal will be served on Friday, August 2, from 12-1:30 p.m. at Assumption Catholic Church (207 East Third Street, Morris, MN 56267). This month’s menu highlights ingredients purchased from the local farmers market. The event is free and open to all members of the community.

Since its inception in January 2009, Community Meal has established a reputation for providing delicious menus and warm, welcoming atmospheres. Providing free meals to hundreds of Stevens County residents while opening space to build bridges and strengthen existing connections, the project is a valued community event. Meals are served six times during the academic year on Monday evenings from 5:30 until 7 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church.

The August menu will include spring rolls, potato salad, grilled vegetables, and zucchini chocolate cake. Gluten-free and vegan options will also be available. The meal will be planned and cooked by students in the University of Minnesota, Morris’s STELLAR and Gateway programs, as part of a summer day of service. These students will complete several projects with community organizations throughout the day, which will culminate in the meal.

Support for Community Meal is provided by a broad coalition of local businesses and organizations, one of which serves as the primary sponsor each month. By serving the meal, sponsors hope to initiate new connections among community members and provide a warm meal to those who may not always be afforded one. Primary sponsors for the August meal are Morris’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Intercultural Programs and Bremer Bank. Ongoing sponsors include Pomme de Terre Food Co-op, Willie’s Supervalu, Faith Lutheran Church, and the Office of Community Engagement. Staff and board members of regional community organizations are invited to attend the upcoming meal and informally share information about their agencies and volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers looking to help cook or serve the meal are welcome to come to Faith Lutheran Church (108 West Eighth Street, Morris MN 56267) from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, July 28, or after 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 1. To get involved as a sponsor or volunteer, contact the Office of Community Engagement at 320-589-6457 or engagmnt@morris.umn.edu.
