A wide variety of activities awaits incoming students at the University of Minnesota, Morris’s New Student Orientation, beginning Sunday, August 25. In addition to providing time to buy books, tour campus offices, and find classrooms, this three-day orientation enables students to make connections with new and returning students, staff, and faculty, discover exciting components of academic and campus life, find their niche in student organizations and co-curricular activities, and acquaint themselves with the campus and community.
Orientation begins for first-year and transfer students on Sunday, August 25. These students will move-in/check-in from 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. During the day they will also have a chance to meet their Orientation groups and take part in an opening convocation and welcome. Later in the evening students are invited to attend the Community Picnic and enjoy an improv show performed by Breakfast for Dinner.
On Monday, August 26, students will meet with their Orientation groups for a variety of information sessions. They will also take part in several evening activities with their new neighbors, including the Party, sponsored by the Wellness Center, and the beloved Extravaganza.
On Tuesday, August 27, students will meet with their Orientation groups as well as their academic advisors. During this time students may also take placement exams and audition for music ensembles. They will end their day with the Activities Fair and the annual First-Year Student Ice Cream Social, sponsored by the University of Minnesota, Morris Alumni Association. Classes begin on Wednesday, August 28.
During the orientation weekend, Morris will also open the doors of its Green Prairie Community. This new residence hall complements Morris’s focus on environmental sustainability and is the first new residence hall on campus since 1971. The two-story facility will provide housing for 72 first-year and upper-level students in the upcoming year.
Following the first week of classes, new and returning students are invited to take part in Welcome Weekends 2013. Beginning Thursday, August 29, students may look forward to film screenings, campus picnics, tours, dances, games, a concert on the mall, and more. A full listing of activities is available on the campus calendar.
