The University of Minnesota, Morris’s 2013-2014 Performing Arts Series will continue with Susan Werner’s Hayseed Project on Saturday, October 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center's Edson Auditorium. Backed by two sidemen, singer/songwriter Werner brings her unique musical mix of Americana, bluegrass, folk, and jazz to her newest project and recently released CD, Hayseed.
Released in June, Hayseed is the fourth in Werner’s series of concept albums. With it, she returns to the language and characters of her roots: farming, rural America, locavores, food safety, and the comic potential of herbicides. The daughter of Iowa farmers, Werner addresses topics from sustainable agriculture to cultivating a sense of place through her performances.
A variety of farming and healthy eating activities will accompany the performance. There will be a panel featuring Werner as well as alumni Bryan Simon ’03, area CSA farmer, and Heidi Eger ’13, Green Corps staff, at 1 p.m. in the Turtle Mountain Cafe. An open mic performance focusing on farming and food will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Turtle Mountain Cafe. A farmers market will take place from 5–7 p.m. and from 9–9:30 p.m. in the Student Center’s Oyate Hall.
