Morris to Host Marina Adshade in a Convocation

Posted by Jenna Ray on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013

Event Date/Time: Monday, Oct. 14, 2013 7:30 pm
Location: Edson Auditorium

The University of Minnesota, Morris will host Marina Adshade, author of Dollars and Sex, in a convocation on Monday, October 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center’s Edson Auditorium. Adshade’s talk is named for her book and blog. This event is free and open to the public.

Adshade will weigh in on how the economic climate dictates with whom we spend our time and on what we spend our money. Taking hard data into the bedroom and using the lens of economic theory to examine matters of love and libido, she argues that, now more than ever, it is important to understand how our economy is affecting the personal aspects of our lives. According to Adshade, understanding how these markets operate provides a structured way to think about the world.

Adshade has spent the last ten years teaching economics and engaging in original economic research. She holds a PhD from Queen’s University and teaches economics at the Vancouver School of Economics at the University of British Columbia. As a writer, Adshade found success almost immediately after launching Dollars and Sex on the online knowledge forum Big Think. She is a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail and Canadian Business Magazine and has written for the Wall Street Journal, the Sunday Times (UK), the Daily Mail (UK) and Buzzfeed. Adshade’s first book, Dollars and Sex: How Economics Influences Sex and Love, appeared in bookstores earlier this year.

Following the evening lecture, there will be a reception and book signing with Adshade in the Student Center’s Oyate Hall. Light refreshments will be served.

“Dollars and Sex” is presented by the Campus Activities Council Convocations Series. Primary funding for this series is provided by University of Minnesota, Morris students. Additional information is available online.
