University of Minnesota, Morris Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean Dr. John F. Schwaller has accepted the post of president of the State University of New York College at Potsdam, effective July 1, 2006.

"Fritz Schwaller has been an energetic, intelligent and hard-working leader for our campus," said UMM Chancellor Sam Schuman in making the announcement to the campus. "As an academic, he has continued to be a highly productive scholar and a popular and engaged teacher. We wish him the very best as he moves to this important new position at another small rural public college."

Dr. Schwaller will continue at UMM until late June. He will step down as vice chancellor and dean at the beginning of UMM's Spring Break, March 4.

Schuman also announced that Dr. Judith Kuechle, chair of UMM's Division of Education, will assume the task of interim vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean through the fall semester of the 2006-07 academic year.

"Dr. Kuechle is a strong, patient, thoughtful and experienced faculty member and administrator," said Schuman. Kuechle has been at UMM since 1988. In addition to her administrative service as division chair, she also served as assistant academic dean (for student issues) in 2000-01. "Judy will provide stable campus leadership during the transition to a new chancellor and vice chancellor for academic affairs," added Schuman.

Finally, Dr. Leslie Meek, psychology, has agreed to serve as assistant academic dean with Kuechle. Meek, a UMM graduate, "has been doing excellent work with student retention issues and with our Scholastic Committee," said Schuman.
