Cougar WBB Season Successes

Cougar women’s head basketball coach Randi Peterson’s inaugural season has proven to be a successful one. Peterson led the Cougars to the playoffs and has been recognized as the UMAC women’s basketball coach of the year.

Randi Peterson was named head women’s basketball coach at the University of Minnesota, Morris this past summer. Nate Oakland was named the Cougar's assistant coach.

In her first stint as a head coach, Peterson has been recognized as the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) women’s basketball coach of the year.

Peterson took over a team that that had won just 10 games last year.

With only two seniors on the roster, several new additions and returning players hungry to put a winning team on the floor, she guided the Cougar women’s basketball team to its first ever appearance in the UMAC post-season tournament and the first winning season since 1997-98.

Minnesota-Morris, picked sixth in the UMAC pre-season coaches poll, finished the season 16-10 and 10-4 in the UMAC and were battling for the regular season conference title right down to the final game.

Other season highlights include senior Malinda Berglund (Grand Marais, Minn.) surpassing the1,000-career point total and being named UMAC all-conference. Sophomore Alaina Benson (Clinton, Minn.) was also named UMAC all-conference and junior Annika Bergman (Superior, Wisc.) was named UMAC academic all-conference.
