Tim Grove named head women's basketball coach

Athletic Director Mark Fohl announces that Tim Grove has been named head women’s basketball coach at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Grove, who was selected following a national search, served as interim head coach for the Cougars women’s basketball team this past season.

As interim head coach, Grove led the Cougar women’s basketball team to their second straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) post-season tournament berth. UMM finished second in the UMAC regular season standings with a 10-4 league mark, 15-12 overall. The Cougars advanced to the UMAC women’s basketball post-season tournament championship game for the first time in the program’s history, losing to Presentation College, 82-73, in the title game.

“Tim did an outstanding job this year as the interim coach and I am happy to know that the women’s basketball program will be able to continue making progress under his leadership. I would like to thank the search committee, Tracey Anderson, faculty athletic representative Matt Johnson, assistant football coach Christian DeVries, head men's soccer coach and Alaina Benson and Jaime Rainey, members of the women's basketball team,” added Fohl, who chaired the committee.

"After a national search, Tim Grove emerged as an outstanding candidate who will provide stability and leadership for our Cougar women's basketball program,” said Tracey Anderson, faculty athletic representative. “I am extremely pleased that he accepted the position. I am optimistic about the future of our program under Tim's leadership."

Sandy Olson-Loy, UMM’s vice chancellor for student affairs, stated, “Tim Grove is a gifted coach who leads with integrity, clear vision and an unwavering commitment to student growth and success.”

“I'm very excited to have the opportunity to remain here at UMM,” said Grove. “We'll continue to do all we can to make the women's basketball program a source of pride for our University and community.”

Prior to coming to UMM, Grove coached boys’ basketball coach at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle High School and men’s basketball at Rainy River Community College. He rebuilt Rainy River’s basketball program, leading the Voyageurs to the Minnesota Community College state tournament. Grove has led numerous girls’ and boys' and general basketball camps. Grove received his master's degree in kinesiology from the University of North Dakota. He completed his undergraduate work at Fergus Falls Community College and Mayville State University. Grove was a standout college athlete who also excelled off the court he was a college basketball and football team captain, an Academic All-American and Student of the Year.

A native of Grey Eagle, Tim is the brother of Cougar men’s basketball head coach Paul Grove and the fourth Grove to pass through the doors of the UMM P.E. Center. Brothers Chris and Josh were UMM students and Cougar athletes in football and basketball, respectively. Tim and his wife, Kristin, live in Morris with their daughter, Madelyn.
