Two University of Minnesota, Morris students took first place as members of the Fond du Lac team during the First Annual Anishinaabe College Quiz Bowl at The College of St. Scholastica on April 28.
Sharon Jurina and Nicole LaFrinier are enrolled in the Anishinaabe language course at the Fond du Lac Tribal Community College via Interactive Television at UMM. Both grew up on the White Earth Reservation where Anishinaabe is spoken.
The entire class participated as a team. The Quiz Bowl was comprised of eight teams who offer courses in the Anishinaabe language. Each team submitted 50 questions in the Anishinaabe language. Teams were placed head to head in a double elimination competition.
The Fond du Lac team won first place following a few "nail-biting" rounds against the team from St. Scholastica, who placed second. The winning plaque will be hung at Fond du Lac College.
"It was a great experience. I think the one thing I took away from the competition was that there are a lot more people who know the language than I thought and that was really exciting," said Jurina.
