UMM Athletic Director Mark Fohl has announced that Dan Magner has been named the women's head soccer coach.
Magner has spent the past five seasons as head coach at St. Bonaventure University. Prior to that, he was an assistant at the University of Massachusetts for two seasons. He takes over the reins of the Cougar women’s soccer program from Christian DeVries. DeVries has been named the men’s head soccer coach, which has its inaugural season in the fall of 2006.
Magner said “I am delighted to have the opportunity to join the University of Minnesota, Morris community. Athletic
Director Mark Fohl, Vice Chancellor Sandra Olson-Loy, Head Men's Soccer Coach Christian DeVries, all the
members of the search committee and the student/athletes on the women's soccer team did a wonderful job presenting UMM to me during the interview process. Each of them has a strong commitment to the mission of the University and the positive role that athletics can play in the lives of the students.”
He added, “UMM has a lot to offer. You can tell people enjoy being here, with the big smiles on their faces, their
enthusiasm to share with you and sing the praises of their school and community.”
Athletic Director Mark Fohl stated, “We are very pleased to have Dan join our coaching staff. His enthusiasm and experience as a coach and his commitment to the academic achievement of his athletes makes me feel confident that our women’s soccer program will continue to progress.”
In his five seasons at St. Bonaventure, an NCAA Division I school, Magner was 28-62-4. The 2002 team was 10-9 overall, the second most wins in the program's history.
His teams earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) team academic award from 2002-2005 and his team was number one in the Atlantic-10 Commissioner’s Conference honor roll.
Magner coached five Atlantic 10 All-Conference players and one athlete named to the Atlantic 10 all-rookie team.
As an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts before being named head coach at St. Bonaventure, Magner was also the head coach at the University of Kansas from 1997-1999 and an assistant coach at Wake Forest University before that where he helped lead the team to an NCAA “Sweet 16” tournament bid.
Off the field, Magner has been on the regional coaching staff of the National Olympic Development Program since 1995 and has been a member of the National Soccer coaches Association since 1986.
He is also involved in the M.V.P. (Mentors in Violence Prevention) program for the past seven years and is certified to present workshops to collegiate teams in an effort to educate student/athletes in methods of violence prevention.
A native of Hingham, Massachusetts (located just south of Boston), Magner earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1985 from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts where he was also the captain of the men’s soccer team.
