Homecoming 2009: Back in Black!

Chosen by Campus Activities Council Homecoming and Traditions Committee students, “Back in Black” is the theme for Homecoming 2009 at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Alumni, current students, faculty, staff, and members of the community will be “glad to be back”—words from a 1980s ACDC song that ring true on the Morris campus! No need to wear black. Maroon and gold is preferred from Wednesday, October 7, through Sunday, October 11, 2009.
Wednesday: Date Auction
A favorite student event is back in the Homecoming line up this year. The Black Student Union Date Auction will be held at 8 p.m. in Turtle Mountain Cafe.
Thursday: powderpuff football and tug-o-war
Students will be decorating throughout the day in the residence halls. Don’t miss the Powderpuff football game at 7 p.m. in Big Cat Stadium and the residence halls tug-o-war that follows.
Friday: disc golf, distinguished alumni awards, gathering and dance
A disc golf tournament will be held at Pomme de Terre Park at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, October 9. Everyone is welcomed to participate. No need to pre-register. Just show up and plan to have a good time.
Also at 5:30 p.m., the University of Minnesota, Morris Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner begins with a reception in the Alumni Room in the Student Center. During the dinner, two chemistry majors will be honored as 2009 recipients of the UMM Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award. Randy Koopman '78 is senior director for Waters Global Services. Ken J. Bruss '78 is director of technical operations for sanofi-aventis Pharmaceuticals.
Friday evening, the Class of 1984 will gather at 7 p.m. at the Prairie Inn Ranch House Lounge, and the Black Student Union will host a dance at 10 p.m. in Oyate Hall in the Student Center.
Saturday: 5-K, tailgating, football, 1984 reunion, and faculty/staff art exhibition
Saturday’s event line-up begins at 8 a.m. with run-day registration for the Cougar 5-K at the Regional Fitness Center (RFC). Start time is 9 a.m. Contact the RFC to pre-register at 320-589-6428.
The tailgate party begins at 11 a.m. west of Big Cat Stadium. Don’t miss great traditional tailgate food and live music before the 1 p.m. kickoff of an exciting afternoon of football, the Cougars versus Crown College. Following the game, the UMM Alumni Association will host a reception for alumni, friends, faculty and staff at LaFave House, located at 305 College Avenue.
From 5 until 6:30 p.m., a reception will be held for the Division of Science and Mathematics Invitational Exhibition at the Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance Gallery, located at 630 Atlantic Avenue, downtown Morris. The exhibition features the creative expression of science and mathematics faculty and staff. Jim Togeas, professor of chemistry and author, will read from his short stories at 6 p.m. On saxophone, Joe Alia, assistant professor of chemistry, will provide music.
The Class of 1984 will hold a reunion dinner at 7 p.m. at Bello Cucina, downtown Morris, and a KUMM Concert and Young Alumni Gathering will start at 10 p.m. at the Old No. 1, downtown Morris.
Regional Fitness Center 10-year anniversary
Throughout Homecoming 2009 weekend, the Regional Fitness Center will celebrate its10-year anniversary. Two highlights include a hog roast beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday on the RFC grounds or in the gymnasium in case of inclement weather, and a free-will-donation pancake breakfast beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday in the gymnasium.
Sunday: Homecoming Concert
On Sunday, the Concert Choir and Symphonic Winds will join their musical talents with those of alumni to present the traditional Homecoming Concert. Held in the Recital Hall in Humanities Fine Arts, the concert begins at 2 p.m. and a reception follows.
Don’t forget to stop in at the Bookstore on Saturday to pick up your “maroon and gold.” Located in the lower level of the Science building, it will be open from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. with a twenty-percent storewide Homecoming sale.
