UMM's Mathematics program combines breadth with depth by offering a core set of math courses as well as a wide array of electives for majors to choose from.
UMM offers math courses in such areas as calculus, linear algebra, real analysis, and mathematical statistics. Our math program also features a required year-long senior seminar project, in which you'll have a chance to do an in-depth and independent mathematics-related research project.
Math courses at UMM are small when compared to those at many other schools. All lower-level (first and second year) Math courses have no more than 35 students, while upper-level (third and fourth year) courses have between 5 and 20 students. UMM's small class sizes helps our students and professors to get to know each other. Professors are available for consultation outside of class and there is always tutoring help in the evenings provided by teaching assistants and tutors. We have 8 full-time math faculty and 3 full-time statistics faculty. There are also many opportunities for students to take on research projects through the University-wide Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and local Morris Academic Partnership (MAP) program.
After graduating from UMM, about 30% of our Math majors pursue teaching licensure to teach math in K-12 schools while another 30% go on to graduate school. The other 40% obtain jobs in areas like telecommunications, transportation, and consulting, since their problem solving skills are invaluable to many employers.
