Q: I have an area in my yard that's in the shade. What would you recommend for a vine?

A:Well, there are many different vines that we can grow in the shade. Most of them will really like sun, but they will tolerate shade. Some of those are the common ones, and we have Canada moonseed right here, which is a native material. We have bittersweet, which is another one. Common hop is a good one. We can get hardy kiwi, even if you want to play around with that one, that grows fairly well. There are several others that we have - Dutchman's pipe is another one that does fairly well, so there are quite a few that we can use. So remember that they do like sunlight but some of them will tolerate some shade if we have that situation. The heavier the shade, the less flowering and fruiting you're probably going to have on those. So I think that's a consideration to take into account.
