Dividing Day Lillies

Fiberous rooted or massive rooted plants such as day lilies need to be separated each year to prevent them from becoming root bound and dying out in the center of the plant. Pull out dead stems [1] and leaves and dig up the plant. Use two pitchforks back to back to separate the roots. Plants can be moved to another section of the garden. Mix well rotted manure or compost with the soil, put plant in at same depth as previous hole [2]. Make hole big enough to allow for root expansion. Water thoroughly, mounding up soil around the plant to help maintain moisture, taking care not to leave air pockets in soil.
