What you can do during the month of July
Spray Apple Trees
If you grow apple trees, begin a spray program for apple maggots
immediately. You could also hang sticky balls (fake apples) in the trees
to trap the apple maggot flies.
Mulch Flower and Garden Soils
Once the soil warms up, mulch flower and vegetable garden soils. Doing
this conserves water, helps control annual weeds, keeps soil cooler, and
protects soil form the pounding effects of rain and sprinklers.
Fertilize Tomatoes
Enhance tomato growth with a complete fertilizer such as 5-10-10. Apply
fertilizer when they start to flower and produce fruit. If flowers appear
when the plants are still small, nip them off.
Vegetable Plantings
Early this month plant broccoli, cabbage, or cauliflower seeds where
peas, leaf lettuce, or radishes were harvested. Turn the soil; add
fertilizer before seeding.
Water and Mow
Regular watering and mowing will help keep your lawn growing vigorously
during the summer. The thicker your lawn, the harder it is for weeds to
invade and become established.
White Grubs
Dying patches of grass, that is easily removed by pulling it up, may be a
sign of a white grub problem. Treat once you see at least two grubs a
half inch size or smaller, per square foot of lawn.
