August 19, 2013

Dear Faculty:

I am pleased to announce the September 2013 round of the Faculty Research Enhancement Funds (FREF) program, which provides funding to help UMM faculty members support their research-related activities. Applications are due in the Dean’s Office no later than noon on Monday, September 9, 2013.

Of the three FREF funding categories, only Category II applications will be accepted this round; Category I applications for large-scale research and creative projects will be reviewed in the April round only.  As a reminder, Category III, IIIA, and IIIi applications for travel support are reviewed on an ongoing basis and can be submitted at any time.

About Category II:
  • Category II, “Project-Based Faculty Research Support” has a maximum funding level of $1,000 and supports both individual faculty research and collaborative projects.  This category can also be used for services and supply funds, for travel costs to bring collaborators to campus or to meet with collaborators elsewhere, and for other research costs such as indexing, transcription, publication page charges and image charges.

Funds need to be spent within a one-year period.

Electronic applications are preferred; if you are going to send your application via campus mail, please allow at least three working days.

More detailed information can be found at the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean’s website at:

The Faculty Research Enhancement Funds is a great resource to help support scholarly and creative activity endeavors.  I encourage all faculty members to consider applying for this research opportunity.

Once again, Category II applications are due in the Dean’s office no later than noon on Monday, September 9, 2013, with notification of award anticipated by October 4, 2013.

If you have any questions, need further information, or would like assistance in preparing applications, please contact Adele Lawler (, 6018), Emily Carruth (, 6469), or Roger Wareham (, 6462).
