April 1, 2013
Dear Faculty:
I am very pleased to announce the next round of the Faculty Research Enhancement Funds program, with applications due in the Dean’s Office by 4:30 p.m., Thursday, April 11, 2013. We will be reviewing Category I and Category II applications this round.
Category I proposals are only reviewed once a year. This category is designed to fund up to $5,000 for large-scale research and creative projects and has a time-frame of up to three years to use the funds. The number of applications awarded in this category will be limited to approximately five per year. Faculty members receiving funding in this category will not be eligible to apply for Category I funding for three years after receiving the award but will be able to submit applications in the other categories.
Category II applications, "Project-Based Faculty Research Support," support both individual faculty research and collaborative projects. Category II is designed to fund up to $1,000 for small/medium-size research and creative projects (an article, production, installation) or portions of a larger project (i.e., chapter of a book). There is no limit to the number of times applicants may apply for Category II funds, but progress toward project outcomes will be a deciding factor for future requests that include components that were previously funded. More than one Category II can be funded in a single grant round provided the project/activities are distinctly different. This category can also be used to bring collaborators to campus or to meet with collaborators elsewhere.
As a reminder, Category III applications (as well as Category IIIi) are now reviewed on an ongoing basis and are not subject to the deadlines given for Category I and II reviews. Category III provides $400 to help support research and scholarly travel including travel to conferences; Category IIIi provides up to $1,200 for international travel. The award does not cover registration/conference fees. Category IIIi provides up to $1,200 for international travel. A faculty member can receive up to three Category III awards during a given year. Category III applications will be submitted to Adele Raymond in the Dean's Office and, if possible, we ask that proposals be submitted at least one month prior to the travel needing to take place. We anticipate a one to two week turnaround time on Category III application decisions.
Funds from both Categories II and III need to be spent within a one-year period.
Detailed information and application forms can be found at the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean’s website at: www.morris.umn.edu/services/acad_affairs/aavarious.html#researchfund.
The Faculty Research Enhancement Funds program is a great resource to help support scholarly and creative activity endeavors. I encourage all faculty members to consider applying for this research opportunity.
Once again, applications are due in the Dean’s Office no later than 4:30 p.m., April 11, 2013. Electronic applications are preferred; if you are going to send your application via campus mail, please allow at least three working days.
If you have any questions, need further information, or would like assistance in preparing applications, please contact Adele Raymond (raymonda@morris.umn.edu, 6018) or Roger Wareham (warehamr@morris.umn.edu, 6462).
Sincerely,
Bart D. Finzel
Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean
