Parent Four Year Checklist

During your child's undergraduate college experience there are certain steps you can take at timely points in their college life to help insure their success. These steps are included in this checklist for your use.

Freshman Year
  • Help identify life interests, work values & skills
  • Suggest careers of interest that match personality
  • Discuss your own personal career action plan
  • Encourage volunteerism and involvement in community, campus clubs & organizations
  • If major is undecided, discuss options
  • Inquire about Career Fairs attended on campus
  • Encourage Summer Jobs/Internships
Junior Year
  • Talk about family, friends or business associates in their field of interest
  • Encourage membership in professional associations and leadership positions
  • Ask about career related workshops
  • Review your resumes together
If they are thinking about grad/prof school:
  • Encourage research in programs of interest
  • Help keep goals realistic
  • Suggest Internet resources you have found
  • Visit schools with child
Sophomore Year
  • Encourage major selection by end of year
  • Support your student in their search for a mentor
  • Advocate foreign study programs
  • Suggest Undergraduate Research Opportunities
  • Discuss possible Internships/Summer Jobs
  • Ask about involvement in clubs and organizations
  • Inquire about faculty and academic advisor
  • Urge Internet surfing for career options & info
  • Suggest Morris Academic Partners or Morris Administrative Internships
Senior Year
  • Encourage registration with Career Services
  • Suggest potential "references"
  • Discuss career interests realistically
  • Ask about employers met at career fairs
  • Inquire about grad/prof school plans
