Accommodations and Technology-Related Services
Disability Services staff can provide or arrange for the following accommodations:
: Students with disabilities such as M.S. who become fatigued, or who have treatment or medication schedules that make it difficult to concentrate at particular times of the day, may need to schedule their classes to their best advantage. Priority registration gives these students an opportunity to be the first to register for their classes. Students can get the classes they want during the time that works best for them.
: Students with disabilities who want their professors to know more about how that disability will affect their classroom performance can request that the DSO send professors a letter. The letter can serve a number of functions: it can simply inform the faculty member of the student’s limitations or it can ask the instructor to help the DOS identify possible problems the student may have in successfully completing the class.
: For students with mobility issues, access to some of the classrooms on campus may be difficult. Disability Services staff can arrange to have classroom locations changed to accommodate these students.
: In rare instances living with a roommate may be a hardship. In these instances, Disability Services staff can work with Residential Life to secure a single room.
: Note-takers are one of the most common accommodations provided to students with disabilities. Generally, note-takers are enrolled in the class for which they are taking notes. If a student has difficulty with writing or typing, a scribe can be provided.
: Disability Services offers a quiet room in which students can take their tests. Students with anxiety disorders or ADD may benefit from testing in a quiet environment, and in some cases, students may be awarded extra time in which to complete their tests.
: Certified sign language interpreters are provided for students who require an interpreter.
: The Disability Services Office is housed in the Academic Assistance Center (AAC). The AAC provides free tutoring to any student who requests it, and tutors are available for the majority of classes offered on campus.
: Taped lectures and textbooks in audio format can be provided. Adaptive software for screen reading, magnification, writing or test taking is available. Other technology-related inventory includes:
