At UMM students with disabilities are an important part of our campus community. Nationwide and here at UMM, the number of college students with disabilities has steadily increased over the past thirty years. Today, nationwide, one in nine college students discloses a disability.
Students who wish to request “reasonable accommodation” related to a disability in a course based on the protections of Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act must meet with the Disability Services Coordinator and provide appropriate documentation of the disability. The student and the coordinator will review the disability documentation together and determine reasonable accommodations for each course.
Students eligible for accommodation will now distribute the letter describing specific accommodations to their professors. It will only be mailed directly from our office at the student's request. If you have any questions about the details of the accommodations described therein, please do not hesitate to contact me.
We encourage students to avail themselves of the full array of supports available through UMM Academic Assistance (peer tutoring, study groups, technologies, etc). We also encourage self-advocacy, so students may approach you for help and changes in course format and delivery, etc. If that student has not registered with Disability Services, accommodations are entirely at your discretion.
Best of luck with the semester!
