All Degree Applicants: To qualify for commencement 2008 you must be within 15 credits of your degree requirements at the end of spring term AND be registered for your remaining requirements (or have an approved plan in place) by April 7th, 2008.

Dates and Deadlines
Find the official confer dates for each semester at UMM and see when students should apply for their degree.

Distinction Policy
The link above is to the official Senate Policy. To graduate "With Distinction," a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.750 or higher at the time the student graduates. To graduate "With High Distinction," a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.900 or higher. Transfer work is not included in the cumulative GPA.

Graduation Planner
Grad Planner is a tool that can help students, along with their advisors, plan which classes to take each semester. Students: Once you "plan" them, you can run an APAS report within Grad Planner to see how your requirements would be met if you take those particular classes. Advisors: You, too, will be able to review and comment on the plans that your advisees create.


To Qualify for Commencement:

1.   Submit an Application for Degree online.
2.   Be within 15 credits of all degree requirements at the end of spring term AND be registered for any remaining requirements (or have an approved plan in place) by the deadline.
3.   Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00. (Minimum major GPA is specified by each discipline.)


Checklist for Graduating Students

1. Attend a Senior Meeting and pick up your packet (includes an APAS).
2. Apply for your degree on the Student One Stop by the appropriate deadline.
3. Check your APAS on the Student One Stop frequently.
4. Watch your Unversity email account for updates and critical announcements.
5. Check requirements for graduating "With Distinction" or "With High Distinction." Look on your APAS in the box entitled: GPA for UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA COURSEWORK . See also the Senate Policy. Transfer work is not included in your GPA.
6. Check to see what grades you will need to get in order to maintain or improve your GPA. GPA estimator
7. Many students require an "exit interview." Check the Financial Aid Information page or visit the Financial Aid Office to see what needs to be done.
8. Check out the Senior Year Calendar to make sure that you are meeting the appropriate deadlines and attending important events.
9. Check your holds on the Student One Stop. Your degree will not be posted, and your diploma will not be mailed until all financial obligations to the University have been met.
10. Leave a forwarding address with the UMM Post Office.
11. Register with the Alumni Office.

How do I graduate in 4 years?

- Complete a course load of 15 to 18 credits each semester.
- Maintain at least a "C" average (2.00 GPA).
- Take summer classes to catch up or get ahead.
- Avoid repeating classes unless absolutely necessary.
- Coordinate your general degree requirements with major and minor requirements.
- Make full use of academic advising opportunities and facilities available.
- Decide on a major early and stick with it.
- Make your classes a priority. You are here for your degree!
- Schedule your time around your academic plan rather than around your work schedule and/or extracurricular activities.
- Seek help if you are having problems.
