Welcome to UMM

A message from Sandy Olson-Loy,
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Welcome to UMM!

I hope you are having an enjoyable summer and are excited about the coming school year. All of us here at UMM wish you a successful year academically as well as personally.

The UMM Bulletin has all the information you need for academic questions and concerns. The Student Life Handbook is designed to help you become acquainted with the campus environment and provide you with useful information about University policies and regulations which ensure individual rights and privileges. It is also a resource for many campus services and events. I would urge you to become familiar with the contents of both the Bulletin and this online handbook.

The Morris campus provides many opportunities for you to participate in student organizations and the governance system. I would encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to contribute to the well-being of our campus and enhance your personal development. Being involved outside the classroom provides many benefits to you as well as to the UMM and Morris communities.

For students living on campus, it is especially important to review the On Campus Living section of this handbook. It contains important information on residence hall facilities and policies, food service and more.

We look forward to your contributions to the UMM community. The Student Affairs staff are committed to providing an environment that is conducive to your personal development, respects individual differences, and enhances cooperation among everyone living and working here. The Residential Life staff and the Student Activities staff work with many individuals to make your life at UMM stimulating and comfortable. If you have questions, the faculty, staff and student leaders are available to provide help and direction.

Have a great year!
~ Sandy Olson-Loy, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

The University of Minnesota, Morris Campus

The University of Minnesota, Morris campus has a long history of educational service to Minnesota. It began in the late 1800s as an American Indian boarding school, became an agricultural high school in the early 1900s and was designated a four-year liberal arts campus of the University of Minnesota in 1959. The college has grown from an initial enrollment of 238 students in 1960 to nearly 2,000 students, over 350 faculty and staff, and over 7,500 graduates.

UMM's curriculum and faculty are organized into four divisions rather than departments: Science and Mathematics, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education. Majors are offered in 27 disciplines. A 16:1 student-faculty ratio and strong institutional commitment to individual attention bring UMM students into close contact with faculty. The UMM student body consists of a diverse and talented group of approximately 1,900 men and women. The campus attracts students from more than 90 percent of the counties in Minnesota, 30 other states, and 15 foreign countries. Of the entering freshman, 25% rank in the upper 5 percent of their high school class; almost 50 percent in the top 10 percent of their high school class; and more than 70 percent in the top 20 percent of their high school class.

Throughout the year, UMM offers a variety of cultural and co-curricular activities -- theatre productions, concerts, recitals, music festivals, lectures, athletic events -- that are enjoyed by the campus community and the residents of the region. In addition, more than 85 student organizations provide opportunities for individuals to become actively involved in campus activities.
