UMM Campus Emergency Notification System
The established procedure for notifying the campus and its surrounding community of emergency issues. |
| Emergency Alert Radios |
| Emergency alert radios have been placed in selected offices across campus.
This alert radio will sound an alarm tone in the event of a weather or other
civil emergency that may affect the City of Morris or Stevens County. The
radio tone is activated by the Stevens County Law Enforcement Center. The
tone will be followed by a voice message explaining the nature of the emergency
(i.e. tornado warning, required evacuation). At the sound of the tone, please LISTEN to the message and pass the warning on to the offices designated on the following calling/notification list. Take any necessary actions you feel appropriate to protect yourself. There will be a test of the radio as part of the Stevens County Emergency Management System on the first Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m. (at the same time as the city sirens). The tone will sound and be followed by a voice message. Please familiarize yourself with the building tornado shelter. After the test, please call Campus Police at extension 6000 to let them know that the radio was activated. Campus radio locations and a summary of areas of notification responsibility: |

| Campus Crisis Response: |
| Some emergency situations on campus may not be appropriate to be notified
via the Emergency Alert Radios and will more appropriately be managed by
a Campus Crisis Response Team. In January of 2000 the UMM Safety and Security
Task Force identified the Director of Security and the Vice Chancelor for
Student Affairs as the lead people in campus crisis response. When an emergency
situation occurs on the campus, the Task Force recommends that these administrators,
in consultation with the Chancellor, identify a crisis response team of
four to six people to coordinate campus crisis response. Specific team members should vary to meet the needs of the situation at hand. The Campus Crisis Response Team will determine the best notification strategies to use in each situation. The UMM Office of Human Resources will assist in the activation of these notices. Notification strategies may include some or all of the following: Campus postings: UMM Campus Police will be responsible for posting notices across campus and on the front and back of each door to each entry/exit of each building on campus. These notices will displayed on fluorescent green paper and will be removed by UMM Campus Police when the emergency has passed. E-mail: Notice delivered via email to these email groups: FACPA, USA, Allstudents. FAX: Notice delivered via fax. Each Chancellor/VC/AVC will notify the departments/divisions that report to them via fax. A standard fax coversheet will be provided, which will include appropriate notification instructions. Once each department/division receives this notification they are responsible for notifying the students, faculty, staff and guests in each of their buildings/areas. Telephone: Notice delivered via telephone. Each Chancellor/VC/AVC will place a phone call to the departments/divisions that report to them. The phone call should begin with "I am calling to notify you of an emergency." Then proceed to give them the information about the emergency. Once each department/division receives this notification they are responsible for notifying the students, faculty, staff and guests in each of their buildings/areas. Personal contact: Notice delivered in person in situations where there is no technology (phone/fax) available and time is appropriate. Each Chancellor/VC/AVC will notify the departments/divisions that report to them in person. Once each department/division receives this notification they are responsible for notifying all faculty, staff, students and guests within their building/area. Local media: UMM University Relations will be responsible for notifying local TV and radio stations to broadcast to the campus community and/or the public. Surrounding community: UMM Campus Police will be responsible for notifying community law enforcement and community members whose homes/businesses border the campus. For more information about the Emergency Notification Systems, please contact the UMM Environmental Health and Safety Office or the UMM Office of Human Resources. |
