Gay Hall

Floor Plans
picture of students entering gay hall Clayton Gay Hall is a contemporary hall housing 230 students in four connected wings. These wings are connected at the ground level by a main lounge and recreation area, including a plasma TV, ping pong, pool table and vending machines. An outdoor sand volleyball court is adjacent to the building.

Each wing is composed of two cubes. Most wings are coed by alternating rooms. Bathrooms are located on each floor. Generally two bathrooms per floor on each tower will be male and the other two will be female. It can vary depending on the number of male and female residents occupying the floor. Each floor has two lounge areas and a kitchen for residents of the floor.

Gay Hall has a Community Advisor on each floor and a Hall Director who supervises the CA staff. The Hall Director is a full-time staff member of the Office of Residential Life and the CAs are upperclass students. The staff is available to help you get acquainted with other residents, plan activities and answer questions you may have about residence hall living or the campus in general.

Special Housing Options
Theme housing allows students with common interests and pursuits to live together and support each other through planned activities and formal interactions.

Healthy Lifestyles Theme Floor
The Healthy Lifestyle floor will consist of co-ed students living together interested in creating a healthy balanced lifestyle. Education of a holistic healthy lifestyle will be done through programs, speakers, and bulletin boards. The students who live in this community will agree to not have or use alcohol, tobacco, and/or other controlled substances.

World Culture Theme Floor
This floor offers students a place to share their passion for intercultural issues and travel. Students from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds as well as international students and students either returning or planning to travel abroad are encouraged to apply. The world culture floor will consist of students living together on a co-ed floor. These students can share resources, coordinate cultural emersion programs for other students, explore social issues through various activities, and examine their own beliefs and share them with others. Steps taken to share culture will be explored and celebrated.

If you are interested in living in these theme communities, please check it off on your contract. Assignment to these spaces will be filled on a first come first serve basis.

Students who own computers may use direct network access in their rooms. The procedure for connecting to the network from your residence hall is described on the Computing Services website.
For students who don't own computers, the University of Minnesota Bookstore makes several brands available for purchase at special educational discounts.

Please consult with your roommate prior to making plans for TV, refrigerator, etc.

The game room contains a foosball table, ping pong table and a pool table for student enjoyment.

FREE LAUNDRY

The Laundry contains four washers, six dryers, and an ironing board.

Some Interesting Facts About Clayton A. Gay Hall
Clayton A. Gay Hall was built in the 1960s. The hall was named in honor of Judge Clayton A. Gay (1904-1958). Judge Gay was the first president of the West Central Educational Development Association. The building was dedicated Feb. 20, 1966.

The hall is a 52,280 square foot residence hall designed by Carl Graffunder and Associates. The building also contains a clinic for the college health service.
