David C. Johnson Independence Hall

Floor Plan
"Indy" is a contemporary hall housing 240 students on four floors. Each floor has three wings. Each wing has its own lounge fronted by a balcony, and kitchen area. Floors are coed by either alternating rooms or wings. Indy also has a large main lounge area with a plasma TV, ping pong, and pool tables.

There is a Community Advisor (CA) on each wing and a Hall Director who supervises the CA staff. The Hall Director is a full-time staff member of the Office of Residential Life and the CAs are upperclass students. The staff is available to help you get acquainted with other residents, plan activities and answer questions you may have about residence hall living or the campus in general.

 

Special Housing Options

Civic Engagement Theme Floor
Theme housing allows students with common interests and pursuits to live together and support each other through planned activities and formal interactions. The Civic Engagement floor will consist of co-ed students living together that have an interest in volunteer opportunities and community outreach. These students can share resources, coordinate volunteer efforts and programs, and work together while reflecting on their experiences.

All Female Floor
If you would like to live on a floor with only female residents floor 3C is the place for you.

If you are interested in living in this these communities, please check it off on your contract. Assignment to these spaces will be filled on a first come first serve basis.

 

Each room is furnished with:

  • 2 beds
  • 2 mattresses (36X80) and pads
  • 2 desks and desk chairs
  • closet
  • dresser

The room also includes:

  • curtains
  • desk lamps
  • mirror
  • towel bar
  • wastebasket
Students who own computers may sign up for direct network access in their rooms. The procedure for connecting to the network from your residence hall is described on the Computing Services website.

For students who don't own computers, the University of Minnesota Bookstore makes several brands available for purchase at special educational discounts.

 

Please consult with your roommate prior to making plans for bunks, carpets, TV, refrigerator, etc.  Pets are not permitted, except aquarium fish.

 

The small lounges provide an intimate gathering spot for floormates.

 

The Indy lobby is designed for recreation and socializing. Ping pong, pool and TV provide ample rec opportunities, while the comfy furniture invites you to sit a spell and enjoy the student and visiting artists works hanging throughout the lobby.

 

The kitchens on the A and C wings have a refrigerator and sink. On the B wings, there is also a stove for the hall students to use.
FREE LAUNDRY! The laundry contains four washers, six dryers, and an ironing board.

 

Some Interesting Facts About Independence Hall

Independence Hall it is configured into three four-story units or "pavilions" that are set at right angles to one another. The pavilions share joint stairwell towers that both separate the pavilions at each floor level and allow interconnection between them. Each floor of each pavilion is divided into 5 or 7 double rooms, separated by a central lounge. Each lounge has its own balcony.

There are four handicapped accessible rooms on the first floor of the south unit.
