Humanities Fine Arts Policy Statement

The building is at once a teaching facility for art, music, speech, and theatre arts and a cultural center for the campus and, indeed, for the community at large. It contains spaces which are attractive for a variety of other uses, some more directly related than others to the primary purpose of the facility. This statement outlines the general policy and certain procedural details that should be heeded with respect to the use and scheduling of the Humanities Fine Arts Center.

Priority Use of Humanities Fine Arts Facilities

In scheduling the facility, priorities will be given to the formal academic program and to the University-sponsored cultural events which are appropriate to the purposes of the facility. Lower priority in scheduling will be given to University-sponsored events which are less appropriate to the purposes of the facility than non-University events of a cultural nature. Non-University events of a non-cultural nature will have the lowest priority.

Scheduling of Special Purpose Facilities

Scheduling of facilities which are special purpose in nature and related to the academic program of a particular discipline but which also have other campus-wide and community uses, such as theatres, recital halls, art gallery, etc., should be in accordance with guidelines developed for those facilities in consultation with the Humanities Division.

The scheduling of special purpose space for the academic program will be accomplished with the advice of the disciplines of the Humanities Division most closely involved. For the sake of convenience, scheduling of general purpose classrooms will be accomplished so that priority is given to the disciplines of art, music, speech communication, and theatre arts because of the proximity to that general purpose space.

Class Scheduling

Class Scheduling utilizing both special purpose and general purpose classroom space will be handled by a staff member of the Registrar's Office with the advice of the coordinators of the disciplines involved.

Non-Classroom Scheduling

The scheduling of non-classroom use of facilities which are related to the academic program of a particular discipline but which also have campus-wide and community use, such as theatres, recital halls, general purpose classrooms, etc. will be handled by the Office of University Relations in consultation with the coordinators of the appropriate disciplines. The scheduling of these facilities should conform to any written guidelines regarding their use or special restrictions which might be necessary regarding appropriateness of function or security matters.

Scheduling After Normal Hours

Scheduling of a facility which requires access at hours other than those during which the building is normally open will require special supervision or security to provide for protection against theft or vandalism. When necessary, the Office of University Relations will assume the responsibility for making such arrangements.
