Credit by Examination
CLEP
Registered UMM students may earn up to 32 semester credits by obtaining satisfactory scores on the national standardized general examinations of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). These credits may be counted toward the 120 semester credits required for graduation. CLEP credits do not satisfy the residence requirement, however. Four of the CLEP general examinations may be taken for credit: Humanities, Mathematics, Natural Science, and Social Science.
For each examination passed, up to 8 semester credits will be entered on a student's transcript with a S/N grade. If a student has earned or is registered for college credits in the area of the examination before taking it, he or she will receive only the difference between these credits and the 8-credit maximum permitted. If a student has earned 8 or more credits in the area of the examination, no credit will be granted for successful completion of the test.
The CLEP general examinations are given during the first week of classes each semester. Students may sign up for examinations by contacting the Student Counseling office. A fee is charged. Examinations may be retaken as often as desired.
Students may also earn credit by successfully passing the CLEP subject examinations, which measure achievement in specific college courses. There are over 30 CLEP subject examinations covering the content of a variety of courses ranging from Spanish to psychology. UMM allows credit for most. A special fee is charged. To earn credits, a student must meet the national qualifying score, based on a norm group of college students who have already passed the course for which the examination is intended. Interested students should inquire about the full list of CLEP subject examinations at Student Counseling where the examinations are given.
Students who have taken CLEP examinations elsewhere should submit an official transcript of their scores to Student Counseling, where they will be processed for appropriate credit allocation. Students are notified of scores received and credit granted. The Registrar's office makes appropriate entries on students' transcripts in cases where credit is granted.

Dantes - DSST
Colleges and Universities use DSST's to measure a student's knowledge in a particular subject area and may choose to award college credit to a student based on the achievement of a passing examination score. Each institution determines its passing scores for each DSST it offers.
The DSST Program offers 37 test titles in a wide range of college-level academic, technical, and business subjects. Some of the test areas are subjects that people may have been introduced to through a hobby or special interest, e.g., astronomy, anthropology, and art. Some of the tests cover material people have learned on the job, e.g., financial accounting, banking, personnel supervision, and law enforcement. Non-traditional returning adult students and corporate trainees, in addition to military members, now use DSST's on a regular basis.
