New London Community Owned Gerocery Store AmeriCop

Center for Small Towns

Position Description:

In early 2009, New London lost its only grocery store. A longtime hub of community activity, “The Big Store” facility was eventually sold, and the building is being refashioned as a multi-use space for smaller retail and offices. New London is home to a large number of elderly residents and a growing number of young families. With a vibrant and evolving main street, and a host of arts and community events that draw visitors from throughout the state, the possibility of filling a vital small-town niche—community grocery store—has reemerged. Local residents, retailers, and city officials have begun to formally meet regarding the need to develop a viable local grocery model for New London. An early step in the process includes a market research project as described below. The project will explore the level of local interest in and support for a cooperative grocery or other model for a local grocery store, while also gathering more general market information for use in economic planning and business development.

Qualifications/Additional Comments:

We seek a student with experience working in MS Excel, a solid understanding of basic research methods, experience with literature reviews and web-based research, some experience with basic interviewing techniques, and skills necessary to report project outcomes. This project is best suited for a student who is able to drive to New London for a small number of meetings and presentations.
