In case you are wondering who in the council to contact for a certain issue, or if you are considering running for a position, here are the duties of each of the positions as outlined in the Constitution:

President:

  • Presides at all Symphonic Winds Council and general organizational meetings.
  • Acts as spokesperson for the organization.
  • Handles the group's announcements.
  • On tour, informs the band members of concert details, dressing rooms, eating and sleeping arrangements.
  • Must have current information on all band activities.

Vice President:

  • Presides in the absence of the President.
  • Assists the President with administrative duties.
  • Assists the President on tours.
  • In charge of all fundraising activities for the organization.

Secretary:

  • Maintains records of the Symphonic Winds Council meetings and general organizational meetings for distribution to the band including records of who attends and who is absent.
  • Conducts necessary correspondence.
  • Assists the Managers with tour concerns.
  • Takes rehearsal attendance and reports absences to the Director and Symphonic Winds Council.
  • Takes attendance on tour. All students must personally check with the secretary before leaving on tour.

Treasurer:

  • Collect money for Symphonic Winds Weekend and get purchase order to pay the camp.
  • Organize the selling of tickets and CDs at all of the concerts including ordering a cash box and getting volunteers to sell the tickets and CDs.
  • Organize the reception including getting a purchase order for the punch and getting volunteers to help set up the reception and clean up after the reception.
  • Get a purchase order whenever the band needs to buy something such as gifts for guest conductors or soloists.
  • Order CDs for band members, collect money and distribute the CDs.
  • Organize fundraising events and get purchase orders for any needed supplies.
  • Help organize Festival of the Winds, including getting any purchase orders that are needed, getting volunteers for tasks, and being available for additional duties.
  • Help with band tour and collect money from or charge the student account of all students going on the tour.
  • Attend all Symphonic Winds Council meetings.
  • Volunteer for other duties that are discussed during council meetings.

Managers:

  • Oversee set-up of chairs and stands for rehearsals and concerts.
  • Make instrument lists for overseas tours (including make, model, and serial number).
  • Appoint specific band members to load and unload equipment on tours.
  • Prepare a list of all school equipment being taken on tour.
  • Oversee rehearsal and concert set-up while on tour.

Members-at-large (MAL):

  • Handle publicity for concerts.
  • Write and distribute press releases advertising upcoming concerts, special performances, or fundraising events.
  • Assist the other council members with their duties, and serve on committees, as needed.

Webmaster:

  • Design, update, and maintain Symphonic Winds webpage to the preferences of director and other Symphonic Winds council members.
  • Post weekly rehearsal schedule and performance information on a regular basis.
  • Assist Symphonic Winds council with various technological projects and issues.
  • Attend all Symphonic Winds council meetings.
  • Volunteer for other duties that are discussed during council meetings.
