The Techpeople is a group of people on campus who have job responsibilities related to technology. Techpeople meets once a month to discuss technology related initiatives, support issues, and other technology related topics.
Projects for 2011–12
- Google Apps
- Assist all students, faculty, and staff to move to Google Apps for Education. This will provide email, calendar, and collaboration tools for all members of the Morris campus community.
- Active Directory
- Provide automated desktop security management to desktops and laptops through Active Directory. Expand use of encryption on campus laptops and other devices that require additional security. Work to bring the campus into compliance with the University Policy on Securing Private Data, Computers, and Other Electronic Devices.
- Network Upgrade
- Improve high-speed connectivity to the Internet. Provide wireless networking in residence halls and campus apartments.
- Mobile Computing
- Respond to the expanding needs of users with mobile devices, including smart phones, tablets, and net books. Provide instructions for interfaces with Morris campus systems, and adapt Morris websites for smaller form factors.
- Lab Replacement
- Replace computers in the Library 350A lab.
- Website
- Continue coordination with University Relations to update and maintain campus web pages
- UMContent
- Coordinate with University Relations to migrate management of campus web pages to UMContent.
Goals for 2011–12
The goals below are not listed in order of importance. The projects listed under each goal are a subset of all work done. We encourage each team to determine how their projects will help to support our goals.
Improve Student Services
- Upgrade wireless networking in residence halls and campus apartments.
- Continue to provide information sessions at new student orientation.
- Assist students as they move to Google Apps for email and document services.
Improve Services and Support for Customers
- Upgrade wired and wireless networking across campus.
- Assist all students, faculty, and staff to move to Google Apps for Education. This will provide email, calendar, and collaboration tools for all members of the campus community.
- Redesign and rearchitect technology related websites to incorporate new templates and improve organization.
- Implement work plans for Computing Services staff.
Improve Computer, Network, and Physical Security
- Provide automated desktop security management to desktops and laptops through Active Directory.
- Expand use of encryption on campus laptops and other devices that require additional security.
- Work to bring the campus into compliance with the new University Policy on Securing Private Data, Computers, and Other Electronic Devices.
- Encourage migration of department-owned servers to secure Computing Services server space.
- Collaborate with the Office of Information Technology to implement the Sandvine solution for improved network security management.
Improve Campus Infrastructure
- Improve high-speed connectivity to the Internet from campus locations.
- Upgrade wireless networking in residence halls and campus apartments.
- Maintain high availability, scalability, service continuity, security, and data integrity of network and system infrastructure.
- Expand the use of virtual server technology to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
- Migration of campus web servers to Office of Information Technology server hosting
Provide Effective Application Development Support and Services
- Continue to provide consulting and programming services to campus units, and transform their needs into project and program support.
- Utilize change and project management processes to improve customer application development and project support.
