Media Production

The University of Minnesota Morris campus provides professional media production facilities in the mediums of television, live and on-demand web streaming, audio production and graphic design. These services are available to the entire university community in addition to many external clients and broadcast outlets.

The Morris campus utilizes professional, broadcast-quality high-definition (HD) video throughout the entire video production process. The campus production standard uses professional cameras based on Panasonic’s DVC-PRO HD P2 and AVCHD video codecs. Two professional HD post-production edit suites are located in the Humanities-Fine Arts Center and use Apple’s Final Cut Studio. UMM also manages two analog television studios.

Adjacent to the production studios is a state-of-the-art, 12-station media production lab available to the entire campus community, free-of-charge. Each unit is an Intel-based Apple Power Mac tower that includes Apple Final Cut Pro Studio, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver and Illustrator) Vectorworks CAD, among many other software programs.

Both the 12-station Media Production Lab and professional production edit suites are managed by a powerful and robust SANS server by EditShare. With nearly 12 TB of online, spinning disk storage, this technology allows HD video projects to be securely stored and accessed throughout these two locations. This system also integrates a dedicated computer tape backup solution to off-load projects after completion for long-term and perpetual storage.

The Morris campus is also a leader in live and on-demand video web streaming on the Internet, providing live web streaming – also called webcasting – of over 80 academic, external and athletic events each year. To achieve professional-level, live web streaming, the campus has integrated TriCaster Studio for all on-location live webcasting. This solution allows the use of multiple camera inputs, inclusion of graphics, recording, and editing of programs that can be streamed across campus or globally.

Services are available for media conversion of standard and high definition video files, and mastering and duplication of DVD and Blu-Ray discs.

A full audio production facility is also available in Humanities and Fine Arts Center. A newly remodeled audio booth allows professional quality narration and presentations to be digitally recorded and edited.
