About the Henjum Creative Study Institute
Between 1974 and 2008, over 4,200 students participated in the Henjum Creative Study Institute. Outstanding teachers, unique classes, bright and motivated students, college facilities and lots of FUN made the Institute a great place to go for exciting summer study. Courses have been taught in a variety of subjects by UMM faculty, students and alumni, area teachers, CSI alumni and other community experts.
The coming year will be a planning year for Creative Study, and we will not hold the Institute in summer 2009. We hope you will take a look at our other summer youth programs and join us for fun, friendship and learning at UMM in the Summer Jazz Experience or Summer Scholars!
History of the Henjum Creative Study Institute
The West Central Institute for Creative Study was created in 1974 by Professor Arnold Henjum, UMM Division of Education, to provide a unique arts enrichment program for junior and senior high school gifted and talented students. “He was the one who pulled it all together,” said Tom McRoberts, Director of UMM's Continuing Education department. “It really has become an important legacy.” When Henjum retired from UMM in 1992, the program was renamed in his honor as the “Henjum Creative Study Institute.” Between 1974 and 2008, approximately 4,200 students have attended the Creative Study Institute from 93 different K-12 schools in west central Minnesota and beyond.
What better legacy can an educator leave than not only finding better ways to teach children but also finding better ways to teach the teachers of those children. That is what Dr. Arnold Henjum leaves this and countless other communities. Henjum, a Hoffman native and long-time University of Minnesota, Morris educator, died March 5, 2008 at West Wind Village in Morris. He was 82.
