University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler will speak at the 2012 University of Minnesota Legislative Briefing at McNamara Alumni Center, Twin Cities Campus, on Wednesday, February 1, at 6 p.m. The event will be streamed live to the coordinate campuses and online. The Chinese Spring Festival Dinner will be held on Thursday, February 2 at 6 p.m. The event is held by the International Student Association and is funded through ASG and International Student Programs. All attendees are asked to wear red. The color of red in Chinese culture means good luck for the coming year! Tickets, available in the Student Center, are $5 for students and $10 for staff and faculty.

The Music Discipline is pleased to welcome back distinguished guest artist, pianist Ksenia Nosikova on Thursday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the HFA Recital Hall. Nosikova will perform a solo piano recital featuring the works of Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt. The recital is free and open to the public.

Community of Scholars
Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4
On Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4, approximately 200 students from across the country will be on campus to participate in the sixth annual Community of Scholars event. Students from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, New York, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin will compete for the Prairie Scholars Award and the Morris Scholars Award- Morris campus's most prestigious competitive scholarships. Attention elementary education majors planning to graduate in 2014
Interviews will be held February 6 through 10, 2012. Signup sheets will be posted on the Division of Education office door (211) this month. All application material was to be submitted to Pat Nelson in the Division of Education office no later than Friday, December 16, 2011.
Elementary or Secondary Education Program Applicants
You must complete the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations (MTLE) before entering either the elementary or secondary education program. The MTLE will be offered at UMM several dates each month. Contact Pat Nelson, Division of Education, OR Jane Kill, Counseling, for information on registering.
New online transcript ordering system
A new online system for ordering official transcripts is scheduled to go live today. The new system will expedite both ordering and processing and will offer an option for an electronic official transcript that can be delivered minutes after it is ordered. A new pricing structure for official transcripts will also take effect when this new system is launched.
Congratulations to Athena Kildegaard for the nomination of her poetry collection Bodies of Light as a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award. Winners will be announced in April.
The Business Journal ranked 1,001 national colleges and universities on admissions selectivity. Morris was ranked fifth in Minnesota, 46th in the Midwest, and 246th nationally. Read more »
The January, 2012 special issue on behavioral economics and finance of the journal Management Science contains an article co-authored by Stephen Burks, economics and management, and Erin Krupka, School of Information, University of Michigan. The title is "A Multimethod Approach to Identifying Norms and Normative Expectations Within a Corporate Hierarchy: Evidence from the Financial Services Industry," and is based upon research developed by Burks and Krupka in collaboration with Doug Lennick (UMM '09, UMM commencement speaker, May, 2011). The work used behavioral economic field experiments that were conducted with the assistance of Manjari Govada (UMM '12), Chris Thorne (UMM '11), and Tricia Steffen (UMM '11) to measure ethical norms for on-the-job behavior of financial advisers and their corporate leaders. Stephen Burks, economics and management, presented "An Overview of Work on Sleep Apnea and the Risk of Crashes among Tractor-Trailer Drivers," co-authored with Jon Anderson (UMM statistics), Matt Bombyk (UMM '11), Derek Ganzhorn (UMM '09), Tim Ginader (UMM '13), and Xueyang Jiao (UMM '12), M. Berger, Precision Pulmonary Diagnostics, S. Kales and V. Varvarigou, Harvard Medical School, and J. Hickman and E. Mabry, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, to the Transportation Research Board's standing technical committee AT060 Trucking Industry Research, at the TRB annual meetings in Washington, DC on January 23, 2012. Burks is a member of AT060 and the work presented is part of UMM's ongoing "Truckers & Turnover Project." Read more »
